I always had a "male' type view of doctors where I don't go unless on my death bed. I know the body has a tremendous way of healing itself so when I could no longer afford health care, I looked for all kinds of natural alternatives and preventative medicine. I got into coconut oil which led to me finding out all kinds of stuff, including artificial sweeteners. Upon reading a book (written by a heart doctor) on needless surgeries and heart bypasses in America, I was led to this book. I always knew there's money to be made in Washington which has led to the lobbyists running most of the government and us. We've been duped. I was appalled and horrified but yet, not surprised at what's going on in the medical field. After reading this book, I really DON'T think we have the best health care the world has to offer because we follow an agenda which the doctors follow which they followed from the companies and schools which trained them. I strongly recommend this book and stay away from expenses and bad health you don't need or want by staying out of the hospital all together. I believe Dr. Mendelsohn because he, like the Apostles have nothing to gain and everything to lose by talking.
I used to enjoy his column in the newspaper 25 years ago - before the Buffalo News took it out, bowing to the protests of area medical doctors who were saying his ideas were "dangerous". Yes, they actually printed that in the paper as the reason why they were removing his column. ('The hospital is a war zone. Never stay there without an advocate with you'. Who today does not know that to be the truth? Only those who have no experience with hospitals!) This book is out of print, but it has much to offer. If nothing else, it reminds us that our bodies belong to US and we do not have to be kowed into doing ANYTHING that we do not want to do with it or to it. And that includes medical treatments that are championed today and in the trash tomorrow.All hail the Internet where free speech at least has a hearing. (Admittedly, where valuable stuff resides alongside a bunch of garbage. At least, we can decide for ourselves which is which and not have a newspaper decide for us. )This book does not disappoint. I enjoy it.
Dr Robert Saul Mendelsohn, MD was a friend of mine. He was very kind and basic in his approach to people and assumed that most people knew what they wanted for themself.I was present in a lecture at a convention when he was heckled by a naysayer, February 1984, in Pasadena, CA. The heckler said that many doctors work very hard and want to do the best they can to the point that they hurt their own health. Doctor Mendelsohn replied, "Yes, let me underscore what you have said. Doctors have the highest rate of broken marriages, divorces, alcoholism, drug addiction, psychotic breakdowns, and mental hospitalizations. That is why when I tell people when you are facing a doctor, you are facing one of the sickest members of society, especially women doctors..."As direct and cruel as this statement may be, it is the truth. Dr. Mendelsohn attended the University of Chicago Medical School in the late 1940s-1950s. He was there during the Dieckmann Study which showed that DES was completely ineffectual in preventing miscarriages, yet it was prescribed for another 30 yrs and now we have the third and fourth generation of DES children. The mothers had a higher rate of breast cancer, the daughters and sons had high rates of reproductive tract abnormalities, cancers, and fertility problems, and the ones who were able to have children despite their problems now have children with the same problems. How cruel is that? These people never gave informed consent to this damage!Dr. Mendelsohn spoke out against the rising rate of caesarean sections which are now over 50% in many areas, against vaccinations, against chemical contraception, episiotomies, IV feedings during labor, denial of breastfeeding, routine hysterectomies, and many more routine procedures that have dubious advantages. His advice is that the very best of American Medicine is in emergency care, so the only time to go to a doctor is when you are carried to a doctor, as in the treatment of shock, trauma, broken bones.Some of the advice and examples are dated, but think about it. How much has really changed for the better in the past 40 yrs since this book was first written? The vaccine schedule has expanded, caesarean sections and labor inductions and augmentations are very routine, antidepressants are recommended more, and homebirth midwives are still harassed.
